Which Way is North?

Do you see it? This common question frequently precedes the rediscovery of one of the most commonly recognized configurations of stars on the northern sky: the Big Dipper. This grouping of stars is one of the few things that has likely been seen, and will be seen, by every generation. The Big Dipper is not by itself a constellation. Although part of the constellation of the Great Bear (Ursa Major), the Big Dipper is an asterism that has been known by different names to different societies. Five of the Big Dipper stars are actually near each other in space and were likely formed at nearly the same time. Connecting two stars in the far part of the Big Dipper will lead one to Polaris, the North Star, which is part of the Little Dipper. Relative stellar motions will cause the Big Dipper to slowly change its apparent configuration over the next 100,000 years.

The "J" stroke

The J stroke is an elegant and efficient way to keep the canoe moving forward in a straight line. The stern paddler uses it frequently (nearly every stroke). For a solo paddler, a good effective J stroke is essential. A good J stroke opens up a whole new world of canoeing. But, it is the most difficult canoe stroke to learn.

The path of the paddle traces a J in the water. This J in the water should get narrower as your J stroke improves (less prying action).

The J stroke is a continuation of the forward power stroke. As soon as the paddle shaft begins to go past vertical (about when it is beside the knees of the paddler), the paddle should be turned quickly so that the power side of the blade faces out away from the canoe.

That is, turn the thumb of the top hand down and forward. The quicker and sooner the top hand is turned down, the better the J stroke. The blade should tend to move under the canoe. Resisting this tendency may be enough of a correction.

The blade face should become parallel to the side of the canoe as quickly as possible. When the blade comes out of the water, its face should be parallel to the side of the canoe (perpendicular to the surface of the water).

CHRISTMAS PARADE WINNERS!

The Business Improvement Council announced the winners in the Cocoa Beach Chritmas Parade. The award for Best Walking Group? YMCA Indian Guides! "We were very impressed with the recitation made at the reviewing stand," said parade judge Frannie Fictious. "It was the recitation of the Indian Guides Aims that pushed the Creek Tribe over the top." The Chief of the Creek Tribe was, as usual, unavilable for comment.

December 9th 2006 - The Cocoa Beach Christmas Parade

The Central Brevard chapter of the American Indian Heritage Council has announced that it will be awarding cash prizes for the best American Indian costumes at the Cocoa Beach Christmas Parade.

A ten-dollar prize will be awarded for the best costume by a youngster, ten and under, and a twenty-dollar prize will go to the best costume.

Costumes will be awarded during the CHRISTMAS PARADE that will begin at 2:00PM at the "Glass Bank" and Cocoa Beach Library area and travel south along Brevard Avenue. The point of contact for this event is Mr. Pete Cunningham (Phone 783-2228). The costume judging will be by a nine-member committee headed by Randall Horse of the American Indian Heritage Council.

Aho, Creek,

I apologize most profusely for the Snake Family's lack of participation in IG events this season. In order to obtain a peaceful union with squaw, I have agreed to work many weekends in order to help out at the Snake TP during the week with all homework and little brave/princess activities, etc. Subsequently, I am often many long runs from TP on weekends. Such will be the case this weekend. Perhaps Rattlesnake may come for a stay with another Creek family for at least the afternoon/evening of Saturday.

Spring Soccer

Please find attached updated informatiuon on the spring seasons registration deadlines. I have listed some of important dates below as well. Please share with your teams/parents/players.

The following dates an locations have been reserved and confirmed for face to face opportunities for registering.

1. Saturday January 13th Kiwanis Island Community building 10am-2pm

2. Saturday January 20th @ Merritt Square Mall(near the food court) 10am-2pm

Other important dates to remember:

1.Cut-off deadline for returning players to register is December 31st per the flyer we are distributing.

2. Coaches meeting tenatively scheduled for February 22nd 6pm at Jefferson.

4. January 20th is the last date for Spring registration. All must be in by that date.
