Gaetjens originally committed to play for the Division III U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. His original intention was to become a harbor pilot, which is someone who helps guide larger ships in and out of port. He tossed it out for a chance to attend the University of Florida.

"This is an opportunity I'll never have again," Gaetjens said. "It fits my needs more. I like structure, but not structure 24/7. I don't want to be controlled by the government when I go out after graduation."
